Featured: American Weight-Driven Clocks
Early
American clock makers were dependent on European sources for fabricating
clock springs to power their movements. The traditional solution to that problem was to create weight-driven movements.
 |
Because
of the distance required for the weights to drop, clock cases were
relatively large. With the Industrial Revolution, spring-driven
clocks were made, reducing case size and freeing cabinetmakers to create
new designs.

Production
of weight-driven clocks still continued, however, principally for
precision timepieces. The "round head" case was a
popular style whose production lasted into the early 20th century. |
